Why is there so much “stuff” in our water?
It comes down to a combination of chemical treatment, high mineral content, and aging infrastructure.
Chemical Treatment:
Chlorine, fluoride, and disinfectants are added to make water safe — but they leave behind a strong smell and chemical taste.
Metals from Aging Pipes: Water flows through kilometres of old pipes before it reaches your tap. Along the way, it can absorb copper, iron, or even trace lead from corroding infrastructure.
Runoff Pollution: In some areas, fertilisers or industrial runoff can seep into groundwater — adding nitrates, phosphates, and other extras.
Naturally High Minerals: Perth’s groundwater flows through rock and soil, collecting calcium and magnesium — which boosts TDS (Total Dissolved Solids).
How do you measure the amount of "stuff" In the water?
A TDS meter, short for Total Dissolved Solids is a simple and affordable tool that shows how much stuff is in your water.
It measures everything in your water that isn’t water — including chlorine, fluoride, minerals, metals, and trace contaminants.
The higher the reading, the more “stuff” is floating around in your tap water.
In most Australian cities, tap water ranges between 50–150 ppm. This is reasonably soft drinking water, often found in natural springs.
But in Perth? It’s often between 300 - 500 ppm. While acceptable for drinking, it has often has a gritty or metallic taste that leaves that horrible taste in your water.
